Just like humans, our beloved four-legged companions can also reap the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) oil. As you may recall from What is the Endocannabinoid System?, all mammals have an endocannabinoid system. Like us, our favorite furry friends also possess a network of CB1 and CB2 receptors and endocannabinoids, and we can use CBD for pets as well.
CBD for Pets: What other owners have reported
The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association published a survey this past spring titled “Consumers’ Perceptions of Hemp Products for Animals”. The purpose of the study was to identify which CBD products pet owners are purchasing, why they are purchasing them for their pets and how beneficial they believed the CBD products are for their pets. Part of the study included an anonymous online survey, which collected 632 responses. Of those responses, 58.8% said they are currently using a CBD oil product for their dog. 77.6% of those respondents said they use a CBD oil product for their dog because of an illness or condition diagnosed by a veterinarian. The most common conditions identified include: seizures, cancer, anxiety and arthritis. 11.93% of respondents said they are currently using a CBD oil product for their cat. 81.8% of those respondents said they used a CBD oil product for their cat because of an illness or condition diagnosed by a veterinarian.
Conditions that pet owners are using CBD products to treat their pets include:
- Anxiety, Fear and Phobias
- Digestive Issues
- Joint & Mobility Issues
- Lack of energy
Personally, I began giving my 13-year old black lab, LuLu, CBD treats about nine months ago when I noticed that she wasn’t as animated as she use to be and struggled to finish our evening walk. Since then, her energy levels have been great and she is keeping up with our younger 6-month old German Sheppard, Chief.
